, though, is that president obama did reach out to house speaker john boehner. he is the republican, the senate majority leader harry reid the democrat over the weekend, perhaps to try to jump-start the talks. as of now, as the house of representatives comes back today, as the senate came back yesterday, we're still very much in limbo on the fiscal cliff. >> here's something else we know. some major republicans have come out and they say that they don't feel bound by the americans for tax reform pledge. most recently we saw house majority leader eric cantor. do you believe more republicans will stick by this? >> what we're finding out right now zoraida is that there's a little bit of coming to jesus moment about how to fix the fiscal cliff. for republicans perhaps it is going to be higher taxes. for democrats there's going to have to be some changes to entitlement reform. but grover norquist has been really the person pushing this no tax pledge, has been on our airwaves. he's been talking a lot about it. let's hear what he had to say about republicans who might break the pledge. >>

, because this is part of these ongoing negotiations. but we do know that house speaker john boehner has talked about putting health care reform on the table. there are democrats who want to make sure that middle class americans, those families making up to $250,000 a year, t eir taxes won't go u wealthier americans will pay more. and then both republicans and democrats are talking about putting entitlement programs on the table, mostly republicans pushing this. but some democrats, as well. take a listen what senator dick durbin had to say about that over the weekend. >> social security does not add one penny to our debt. not a penny. it's a separate funded operation, and we can do things that i believe we should now, smaller things, play out over the long term that gives it solvency. medicare is another story. only 12 years of solvency lie ahead if we do nothing. so those who say don't touch it, don't change it, are ignoring the obvious. we want medicare to be there for today's seniors and tomorrow's as well. voucherizing it, privatizing it, we can make meaningful reform. >> the preside

: there was a follow-up phone call with house speaker john boehner, but a much different approach this week. the president's calendar is packed with sales pitches to the public, which he hopes will strengthen his hand in negotiations with republicans. on monday a white house report on the impact of middle class tax cuts on the economy. tuesday, a meeting with small business owners. wednesday, meetings with middle class americans and ceos from some of the country's biggest companies. and friday, a road trip to a pennsylvania manufacturing plant. this approach did not escape the attention of senate minority leader mitch mcconnell who questioned the president's leadership on these fiscal challenges. >> in other words instead of sitting down with lawmakers of both parties and working out an agreement, he's back on the campaign trail presumably with the same old talking points that we're all quite familiar with. >> reporter: but white house spokesman jay carney insisted the president is fully engaged in getting an agreement while taking his case to the public. >> so to suggest that we should now
